Grades should be based on students’ standing among classmates.

Remind teachers that an A grade tells nothing about a student’s learning, nor does any grade present evidence of standards mastery. Encourage evidence-based assessment and discuss how teachers incorrectly weight the traditional grade scale (Reeves, 2004). It’s important to be willing to let teachers try a different instructional approach, if necessary, and to communicate that willingness.

Poor grades prompt students to try harder.

No research proves this, and it unfortunately sets the precedent that grades are fixed. Encourage teachers to revisit content with a different strategy and allow students retakes and redos.
